Visiting Scholars

Policy

From time to time senior scholars and distinguished visitors wish to pursue collaborative research or advanced study at UCSD. Such persons are appointed as Visiting Scholars and are supported from sources outside the University. Visiting Scholars may not hold any other appointment or be employed by UCSD.

University facilities are made available to appointed Scholars holding doctoral degrees or their foreign equivalents. Visitors who have received the doctorate within the past five years should be appointed as Postdoctoral Fellows.

Visiting Scholar status is not limited to a specific period of time.

Insurance

The Office of Research Affairs at the University of California , San Diego will be terminating their Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholar Insurance Plan effective December 31, 2004. This change is due to low enrollment caused by the transfer of postdoctoral scholars to the new UC-wide Postdoctoral Scholar Benefits Plan (PSBP). As a result, your health coverage under this plan will no longer be available after December 31, 2004. If you are currently receiving COBRA coverage, that will also be terminating December 31, 2004.

What are your options?

A. Medical Plan Options

1) Health Net Conversion Plan :

The Health Net conversion plan must legally be offered to you; however, it only provides medical coverage, not dental. While more expensive than the current Research Affairs Group plan and Health Net individual plans, and providing more limited benefits, a Health Net conversion plan provides uninterrupted coverage from the time your Research Affairs Group coverage terminates. There is no health statement of exam required.

To ensure that you can take advantage of your conversion option, you must apply within 31 days of the date your group coverage ends (by January 31.) You have 63 days from the day the plan is terminated to accept conversion coverage. In order to find plan and rate information for the conversion plan you must contact Health Net Member Services at 1-800-522-0088. Ask the representative to send you information on Health Net conversion coverage.

Important : The reason for conversion is to give you a health plan after your group health plan ends. The benefits may not be the same, and the rates will not be the same as what you have currently.

2) Health Net Individual and Family Plan :

The individual and Family plans with Health Net are another option. These plans have to be medically underwritten which requires a medical questionnaire to be completed. Coverage can be denied. This is the best financial option for most individuals. You can find information about the available plans and apply for coverage online at www.healthnet.com . You may also call the Individual and Family Plan department of Health Net directly. Their number is 800-909-3447. Due to the fact that you can be denied coverage based on medical underwriting, it is recommended that you apply for conversion coverage at the same time you apply for individual coverage. If approved for the Individual and Family coverage, you can then terminate your conversion plan.

3) Other Individual Plan Options:

A list of alternate medical carriers and contact information is attached.

B. Dental Insurance Options

Unfortunately a Health Net conversion plan is not offered for dental. The attached list also contains a list of carriers that provide individual and family dental insurange.

We sincerely regret that the Research Affairs administered health plans can no longer be offered.

If you have any questions regarding this notice, please feel free to contact Jennifer Oh at (858) 534-6632 or Merritt Bradford at (858) 534-3553.
