Appointment Titles and Percents

Faculty Fellows will have a 100% nine-month combined appointment as Lecturer and Faculty Fellow Researcher. All appointments will consist of the appropriate Lecturer percent time with the remaining percentage attributed to the Faculty Fellow Researcher title. The percent of the Lecturer appointment will conform to the provisions of the Unit 18 Lecturer Memoradum of Understanding.

Over the course of an academic year, they will teach one course each quarter with a typical appointment being 50% Lecturer and 50% Faculty Fellow Researcher.

During the summer, Faculty Fellows may be appointed for up to 2/9ths in the Faculty Fellow Researcher title with funding from grants or discretionary departmental resources. Fellows may also be hired for up to two months in any other title during the summer.

Salary and Terms

Faculty Fellows will be paid $42,074 (10/07 salary scale) over 12 months for the nine-month academic year. Faculty Fellows are not eligible for merits but are eligible for range adjustments on the Lecturer salary scale.

The service period will be Fall 2008 - Spring 2010. The pay period will be July 1, 2008 - June 30, 2010

Eligibility

Faculty Fellowships will be awarded to recent U.C. Ph.D.s who demonstrate promise for excellence in both teaching and research. Recent U.C. M.F.A.s are also eligible if the nominating department employs ladder-rank faculty with M.F.A.s in the nominee's subfield. At the time of nomination, candidates must be advanced to candidacy, in the final stages of writing their dissertation, and projected to complete all requirements for the degree prior to July 1, 2008.

All offers are contingent upon successful completion of the degree by July 1, 2008. However, individuals who are chosen as Fellows but do not complete all degree requirements by Fall quarter, may be appointed as Associate In at 50% time to fulfill their teaching obligations. When they complete their Ph.D. or M.F.A., their appointment will be changed to Faculty Fellow Researcher/Lecturer at 100% time beginning Winter quarter, but the end date of their Faculty Fellow service period will not be extended.

Selection Criteria

  • Nominee's qualifications and promise for excellence in teaching and research.
  • Proposed teaching and research programs.
  • Plan for mentoring of the nominee.
  • The extent to which the department in which the Fellow will be teaching has a heavy undergraduate workload. That is, extra weight will be given to candidates in departments with high unweighted Penner parameters.
