Faculty Fellow Program
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Questions About the Application Process
Q: If I am a student from another UC campus, can
I apply for the UCSD program?
A: Yes. Any UC Ph.D. student, who fulfills the eligibility
criteria, can apply.
Q: Is preference given to UCSD students?
A: No. Selection is based on the nominee's qualifications,
promise of excellence in teaching and research,
and the department's undergraduate teaching need.
Q: If I am a student from another UC campus, how
do I apply?
A: Compile all the necessary documentation per the
Application Procedure Guidelines (letter to dept
chair requesting consideration as a Faculty Fellow
and proposed mentors, statement of teaching and
research experience and interest in pursuing an
academic career, research proposal, and curriculum
vitae) and submit the package to the UCSD department
where you want your affiliation by the application
submission due date.
Q: Should my application be formatted a certain
way (i.e., font style, size, spacing, margin width,
etc.)?
A: No. There are no specific formatting requirements
for the application.
Q: Do I need to sumbmit letters of reference?
A: No. However, if you are chosen as your departmental
nominee, your mentors will have to submit their
mentor plans for the departmental nomination packet.
Mentors
Q: How do I choose a research mentor?
A: Usually the research mentor is your thesis advisor
(but doesn't have to be). If you're from another
campus, ask your thesis advisor, if he/she recommends
a particular UCSD faculty member. Or contact the
UCSD department chair for recommendations. You should
choose someone who is knowledgeable about your field
and will help guide you in your research project.
Q: How do I choose a teaching mentor?
A: Talk to the department chair. Some departments
already have teaching mentors who work with new
faculty and graduate students, while in others the
department chair will act as the teaching mentor.
Or, talk to faculty whose teaching style you admire,
or who have extensive teaching experience. It is
encouraged that your teaching mentor be from the
same department where you do your teaching.
Q: Can one faculty member be both the research
and teaching mentor?
A: Yes.
Q: What is the obligation/responsiblity of the
mentors?
A: The mentors play a critical part in the success
of the program and success of the Faculty Fellows.
Teaching mentors should meet with the Faculty Fellows
on a regular basis and discuss course design (syllabi,
lecture outlines), administration (TA meetings,
office hours, advice on dealing with special circumstances,
how to run a classroom), provide teaching feedback
and encouragement. The research mentors should also
meet with the Faculty Fellows on a regular basis
and discuss research design, provide feedback (on
drafts of papers, presentations, research), and
encouragement. Both mentors should advise on how
to balance teaching and research, and career development.
Appointment
Q: Can a Faculty Fellow defer the start date of
the appointment?
A: No. The fellowship is to provide learning opportunities
to recently graduated Ph.D./M.F.A.s in order to
prepare them for an academic career. In addition,
the Fellow must fulfill the teaching obligations
to the department for the stated competition years.
